[ Stillnotes ] 24 — My full northern lights gallery

Happy friday y'all. First, quick housekeeping.

Stillnotes will no longer be weekly. This may not be a big deal for you, but it takes some pressure off me. My pace of work on photos is slower right now, editing old trips and working on the book. I want Stillnotes to be valuable and interesting, so I'm taking away the timestamp in favor of only sending when I have something to say and share. You can still expect a few sends a month from me here, but I'm just not promising timelines. Ok, speaking of interesting...

I've finally completed the full northern lights gallery from my trip to Lofoten, Norway. (Best viewed on desktop/big monitor!) There are 20 images in the gallery. TWENTY. I wonder if I'll ever have this opportunity, these conditions, again. One can only hope. I learned a lot about photographing the lights, from settings to the journey itself. I'm sure I'll write up more of an essay about it for the blog but I wanted to finish the photos first.

The image above is probably my favorite, although not necessarily the best. There's a whimsy to the bus stop sign with the lights behind it that makes me happy. It's not about epic foreground but just a fun detail with some magic imbued. It's a good reminder to look for different opportunities in my photography beyond the simply epic.

Another favorite. It's a full image, so much to take in. We were in Bodø our last night, about to turn in after some cocktails when we look out the window to see the lights bursting over the city. The harbor provided some more unique compositions and the complete fore-mid-background combination here really works for me.

Take your time, limit the scroll. Let me know which is your favorite as you look through the gallery. I'm curious what y'all think.

Thanks for your support,

Al
